Magical Christmas Memories by Gina Ardito I grew up with a mother of Polish descent, so there were always lots of bad ethnic jokes and the perfect excuse for every screw-up (“My Polish is showing.”) in our household. But we also had some wonderful traditions—like at Christmas. For us, Christmas Eve was the most important holiday of the year. In my story, “The Gift of the Magic,” featured in the Christmas anthology, Mistletoe and Magic, I managed to cover a lot of the holiday traditions so important to my mother’s ancestral heritage. There were a lot, though, I didn’t get to include. So, come back the house on Long Island in the 1970s where I grew up, and share some traditional Polish Yuletide cheer. Don’t worry that you weren’t invited: according to Polish custom, surprise guests are considered good luck for Christmas. We’ll have to enter through the back door, though, because the dining room table has taken over the living room to accommodate all the guests, making opening the front door impossible. The pink-and-silver artificial tree is in one corner—decorated—but no presents sit beneath it yet. Dad’s already got the television set to Channel 11’s “Yule Log.” It’s a… Read more »

So LA Bridget Hoida Lettered Press June 20, 2012 384 pages Amazon | BN RBM’s Disclaimer Magdalena de la Cruz breezed through Berkeley and built an empire selling designer water. She’d never felt awkward or unattractive… until she moved to Los Angeles. In L.A., where “everything smells like acetone and Errol Flynn,” Magdalena attempts to reinvent herself as a geographically appropriate bombshell—with rhinestones, silicone and gin—as she seeks an escape from her unraveling marriage and the traumatic death of her younger brother, Junah. Magdalena’s Los Angeles is glitzy and glamorous but also a landscape of the absurd. Her languidly lyrical voice provides a travel guide for a city of make-believe, where even Hollywood insiders feel left out. Like a lane change on the 405 freeway during rush hour, Bridget Hoida skillfully navigates the impossible. In So L.A.Hoida offers both a satirical and sympathetic portrait of contemporary Los Angeles through the penetrating prose of her female protagonist. Evoking a dynamic and materialist landscape, So L.A. introduces readers to the unforgettable voice of an extremely talented new writer.

Locke advocated separation of the state from the church and extension of religious toleration. Locke’s political writings were an enormous influence on America’s founders in the preservation of liberty and the establishment of representative government. Locke’s contributions to American Liberty can clearly be seen interwoven in our colonial Declarations of Rights, paraphrased in our Declaration of Independence, and incorporated into our Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Declaration… Read more »
